If you are looking for an opportunity to kickstart your writing why not try NaNoWriMo in November?

Some of our members will be taking part in the gruelling but exciting task of writing 50,000 words in a single month.

The rules are simple:

  • Start from scratch.
  • Start on the 1st November.
  • Finish on the 30th November.
  • Write 50,000 words.

There are no prizes other than self-esteem and the possibility that by switching off your internal editor you may have unlocked your creative genius. This could be the novel your subconcious always wanted to write!

*As lately we have been a little overwhelmed by the number of manuscripts for review each week (which is great!) we will be trying to keep things moving quickly on the night.

So readers please don't bring more than 1200 words and reviewers comment if you wish to but if so limit yourself to 2 or 3 points.

More detailed critiquing can then take place one to one later or via notes made on the manuscript copies.

We will try and get through everyone but if there are too many manuscripts to review we will be asking for volunteers to skip a week.

Please bear with us as we try out the new process!

If anyone wants to give it a whirl they just have to submit an 800 word story with their name, address, contact number and recent photograph (high res) to Nadia.loreda@hearst.co.uk. Only those picked will be contacted.

They are looking for summer inspired short stories that are of a light-hearted nature and would appeal to their readership.

BeaconLit 2014 - Writing Festival in Ivinghoe,Buckinghamshire

BeaconLit is in its second year and has already grown from last year's inaugural half-day event into a full day's festival, with author discussion panels, an 'in conversation' feature marking the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of WW1, sessions on writing craft and getting published and hands-on creative writing workshops.  The atmosphere is informal, with plenty of opportunity to chat to authors, buy books and get them signed, browse the stalls and enjoy some refreshments.

Participating authors include Hilary Freeman, Caroline Green and Teri Terry (YA Fiction), Stephen Booth, Alison Bruce, Jane Isaac, Anya Lipska and Dave Sivers (Crime Fiction), Mandy Kirby (author/editor of  Love Letters of the Great War) and Rowan Coleman (Women's Fiction).

There will also be some attractions for children, with details to be confirmed.

BeaconLit 2014 runs from 10am to 5.30pm in the newly extended Brookmead School, Ivinghoe, Buckinghamshire, with its impressive new main hall.  Ample parking is available on Ivinghoe Lawn, less than five minutes' walk away, and disabled parking will be available at the school.

Tickets are now on sale, and a full day pass purchased before 17 May will cost just £12 (£4 for young people in full time education) - a saving of more than 11%.  That's amazing value compared to many other literary festivals.  For those only wishing to attend for the morning or afternoon, separate half day passes are also available.

Full details, including the programme and profiles of the authors, can be found at the website at www.beaconlit.co.uk.

Author HQ at the London Book Fair - April 2014

I noticed this in the national press and thought I would post about it.

Author HQ @ LBF are hosting a number of seminars, events and pitch sessions at the London Book Fair.
Traditionally the fair is for industry professionals but this particular area looks to be aimed squarely at those looking to self publish. (One clue being it is sponsored by Kindle Direct Publishing!)

For your £30 registration fee you can mingle with the exhibitors in the main fair and take part in the Author HQ seminars and workshops. This fee covers all 3 days.

The workshops have such titles as:

  • Kindle Direct Publishing:
Bestsellers discuss using Kindle Direct Publishing and CreateSpace to fuel
readership growth.

  • Keeping it Short
This session is designed to inform authors about the increasing opportunities around publishing short form fiction and non-fiction.

  • eBook Best Practice:
The do’s and don’ts of writing and publishing an eBook effectively.

  • The Principles of Book Cover Design:
The principles of designing an eyecatching and audience appropriate book cover.

The book fair runs over 3 days  (8th, 9th,10th April)  and it looks like Author HQ is repeating their events over the days. Check out the sites for more information.

38 Reasons why your Screenplay will be rejected.

Love this post over at the Blackboard and the associated infographic (am a big fan of infographics.)
A script reader has put up this list of problems with scripts they have read.

http://theblackboard.blcklst.com/forums/topic/recurring-problems-in-scripts/

Very interesting that the top reason for rejection is.....

...the story begins too late in the script!

Good advice for any novelist or screenwriter. If you want your work to progress past the slushpile or the script reader then get into the good stuff early on - or you risk losing your audience...

Also lots more resources around that site.  Enjoy!

Watch the creative process live (OK - nearly live!)

Last week Brandon Sanderson donated some of his time to stream his writing process live.

For the worldbuilders charity he offered to stream himself writing and share with people the process that he goes through.

The result is a really interesting piece of footage as you can go through the creative process with Sanderson.  throughout the video you can see how he creates characters and plot ideas (with the help of his online audience) and then transfers the ideas to prose. His editing process and approach are there on the screen and it is fun to go through it with him.

Throughout the 4(!)  hours of the video he takes breaks to answer questions from people who are watching the stream live and also interact with his family and pets who interrupt him.

We worth checking out - especially if you are a fan of his work but even if you are not it is always good to see how others approach the writing process.

Watch it here.

Keep up the Momentum - GetWriting 2014

So you've set your goals for writing in 2014 and am sure are making great progress.

Something that helps is to have a short term milestone to aim for.

GetWriting 2014 is a writing conference run by our friends over at Verulam Writing Circle. It is a great opportunity to attend workshops, listen to panels and presentations, mingle with other writers and even get the opportunity to pitch your work.

As a milestone it can be a great target to set yourself to have that novel draft complete (and pitch it!), that short story finished (enter the on the day comp!) or just a chance to re-energise yourself to keep up and hit your targets.

The conference is on 29th March.

Check it out:

We will be going and hope to see you there!

An algorithm to tell you if your book is good?

According to the press there now exists an algorithm to help determine if your book will be a success...

Unfortunately they give only a few clues to what might work but it is worth investigating. Apparently high incidence of nouns and adjectives are found in more successful books whereas a high incidence of verbs and adverbs are found in less successful books.

Article in the Independent here and one a little more detailed on  the Inside Science site here.

Alternatively if you have time and an eye for statistical analysis the original article is here in .PDF format.

Quality or Quantity?

Seems like quantity works well for Russell Blake...who has cranked out 25 novels in 30 months!

For those of you considering self publishing - this could be an inspiration for getting content out there and making money...

How well did last year's writing resolutions work out for you?

It's that time in January when you have probably made a list of resolutions about your writing for this year..and in many cases this might contain many of last year's goals that were not quite achieved.  (Get published, finish writing that trilogy, win the Booker prize etc)

If you want to be a little easier on yourself have a look at this post on fantasy faction. It might inspire you to set some more realistic goals this time round....

Good luck and Best Wishes for a creative and productive 2014!
