Next Meeting...2013!

Hi All,

Due to lots of people being unavailable this week we have called off the meeting for the 13th. Apologies if you were planning to brave the freezing temperatures to bring your manuscript along.

On the upside it means that you can have some extra writing time, all wrapped up warm!

Because of this it will mean that our next manuscript review session will be in the New Year (watch the website for details.)

In the meantime I hope you can find some time in amongst the mayhem and mince pies to do a little writing.

Merry Christmas!

Got your backup?

As someone who recently lost several thousand words to to the dreaded blue screen of death a.k.a hard disk failure, this is a gentle reminder to all of you to check your work is backed up?

Flash or thumb drives are pretty cheap these days but run the risk of being eaten by the dog, lost in the black hole that exists between couch cushions or used as a teether by your toddler.

An easy way to backup manuscripts is to email them to yourself - chapter by chapter and then depending upon your email supplier, you will have them for years.

Alternatively there is cloud storage - gmail users already have access to GDrive (formerly known as Google Documents) which comes with 5GB of free, instant cloud storage.

Not to be left out Microsoft offers up 7GB of free storage with Skydrive. Again those of you with hotmail accounts should be able to get this straight away.

For others check out what your email provider already has on offer - or look at something like DropBox. This service comes with an initial 2GB free storage and could be argued as the initial trend setter for the others to follow.

So do yourself a favour and make sure you backups are up to date! Its easier than you think!

Hiveword - Keep your Story Ideas online - For Free!

If you get stuck without your little black notebook or even think that such things are very old school then you might want to have a look at Hiveword, an online resource for creating and saving plots, scenes, characters, locations.

The best thing about it is its free and enables you to keep your ideas safely tucked away in the Cloud.
Could be just the thing for those of us addicted to smartphones and tablets (although there is no App available yet.)

Hiveword is from the folks over at WritersKnowledgeBase - which is in itself a great hub for searching out writing articles on the web.

This sits alongside other useful tools such as the Shape & Colour Thesaurus, the Location Thesaurus ,the Weather Thesaurus and the Character Trait Thesaurus.

(At this point you can pick your plural: Thesauri or Thesauruses! Collective noun for a group of thesauri anyone?)

Links to all of these can be found on their really useful site.

Check it out!

Words with Jam have launched their short story competitions for this year and revised the format so there are three different competitions with varying word count limits. From what I can see the theme is an open one.

Could well be worth dusting off an old short story from your back catalogue to see if it will fit the criteria.

Literary Dinner - Isabel Ashdown

Last nights dinner with Isabel Ashdown was an enjoyable affair - well organised by  Alison at persuasion events and providing a useful insight into Isabel's writing process. Add to that a free copy of her award winning book Glasshopper and food from Lussmans and it made for a great evening - all in aid of the charity NACOA.

It is good to take a break from writing and get a feel for how published authors go about generating ideas, creating first drafts and working through the editing process. Hopefully we'll get the chance to something like this again in the near future!

Now must get back to finishing that novel...

He seemed like he would be a good person to work with so it is worth looking into. Oh and the winner gets £10K in prize money and a publishing contract.

So what are you waiting for? Check out the link and finish that novel!

Also strange maps on the think big site has some interesting ones - perhaps not all accurate but an interesting spin on things that might lead to a story idea.

As always - hope the links above help you with your writing in some way.

Get Writing 2012

Having attended the Get Writing 2012 conference at the weekend I thought I would share with you some of the hints and tips from the conference.

The day was a mix of workshops, speakers and panels with lunch and pitches to agents thrown in. .

I attended a workshop on characterisation with Toby Frost and a workshop on plotting with Suzanne Mcleod.

Regarding Toby's characterisation workshop, the most idea I found most interesting was what he called 'The Dune moment'. This relates to where places can essentially become characters in your novel and drive plot or at least add colour to the overall story.
A haunted house is a classic example of this and in Dune there are many examples of how the planet itelf became a character in the story.
Toby described the moment when a local tribesman spat on a table to show respect (water being a precious commodity) and the imapct this had in a particular scene. This one memorable scene related to the location of the story adds real colour and background and it made me think about how I could use a similar approach in my current novel.

Suzanne talked about plotting and one of the approaches she described was the use of scenes and sequels in her writing. The idea that for every scene (which may or may not be a chapter) containing character goals and conflicts there has to be a sequel i.e a reaction to that scene from the characters. This sequel in turn will lead to the next scene.

More on this idea can be found on the links from Suzanne's website - particularly the link to Jim Butcher's blog and the book "Techniques of the Selling Writer" by Dwight V Swain.

Finally I will add a couple of links about pitching that I found useful. As it turned out, pitching to the editor, Donna Condon was a lot easier than I had built it up to be - she was very friendly and that helped a lot!

http://www.writing-world.com/publish/pitch.shtml

http://blog.nathanbransford.com/2010/05/how-to-write-one-sentence-pitch.html?m=1

Overall I found it a very useful experience and would recommend it to anyone looking to move their writing forward. Roll on Get Writing 2013!
